Event Specialist

The Event Specialist will support the administration and execution of our successful Makers Market series of events. These market events bring together creatives and makers from our district and region to showcase their products and services in a street market format, often including music, food trucks and partnerships with local brick-and-mortar businesses with the intention of activating our entire neighborhood! During the 2025 season, we closed down two public street blocks and had approximately 30-50 vendors per month.

Supporting these events as a specialist is work with a purpose that will help us bring life to our neighborhood, provide income and exposure for artists and makers, and create opportunities for community engagement and connection!

We are looking for someone who is comfortable communicating with a variety of stakeholders, including vendors, community members, city staff, local artists and more. Communication and organization for this position are key success skills. Most critical for this role is having a positive solution-oriented attitude, a love for community building and a service-minded outlook.

Schedule:

Events are scheduled to take place on the third Friday of the month starting in May and running through October. These markets are open to the public from 6pm-10pm. This position will be onsite from 2pm to approximately 11pm. Attendance at event committee meetings is required - these occur the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9am-10am and are held in person at MoJava and The Gathering Grove. These are all mandatory commitments.

The hours for this position will be highly flexible outside of the scheduled market and committee times. We expect the Event Specialist to work several hours each week providing timely communication leading up to each event. The actual hours of this work will be flexible and determined on the needs of each event. We expect hours to fluctuate week to week but have estimated the workload at 10 hours per week.

Job Duties:

The Event Specialist will support operation of these events by performing a variety of duties leading up to, during and after each market. This will include coordinating with the Uni Place communications assistant and facilitating communication with vendors, artists and program partners ahead of each market.

Pre-event duties might include scheduling street closures, ordering barriers and coordinating with local businesses and partners who will also be engaging during the markets. This position will coordinate with the communications assistant in order to reach out to Uni Place District businesses for their involvement.

Duties during the event will include: marking the vendor space the night before/morning of, arriving by 2pm the day of, checking in vendors, equipment set-up, setting up the Uni Place booth, checking in on vendors during the year, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, responding to questions and needs during the event, and helping with tear-down.

This position does run through December. After the Makers Market season, this position will help to coordinate Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and a Holiday Celebration.

Compensation:

The contract will begin when signed and will continue through the end of the calendar year.

Compensation for this contract is $10,000, estimated to be the equivalent of 10 hours a week, at a rate of $25/hr for 40 weeks (April through December). The pay schedule may be determined based on the needs of the candidate and will either be monthly or bi-weekly.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

● Strong organizational and time management skills.

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

● Creative problem-solving abilities and enthusiasm for community engagement.

● Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

● Comfortable with basic planning tools (e.g., Google Suite, Trello, or event software).

● Some experience in event planning, hospitality, or customer service is a plus.

● Willingness to work full schedule for each event: third Friday of the month including set-up and tear-down time. Exact schedule is to be determined.

● Interest in arts, culture, and supporting small businesses is a big plus!
